A Collect for Conviction of Selfish Good

Holy Spirit, indwelling spirit of the Father, convict us when we are tempted to do things solely to make ourselves look good in others’ esteem, that we would see the pride and neediness of our own hearts. Grow in us a heart of love that does good because of the value you place on each of us as unique creations, through Jesus Christ our Lord, bearer of our sin and healer of our iniquity. Amen. ‘Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.’ – Matthew 6:1 What drives you when you do good for others? How much do you feel the need of their approval or admiration? Talk honestly with God about how much you’d be willing to do good things without being known or acknowledged. Ask him to bring to mind particular situations if none come to mind. What do you need from Him to love others without attention to yourself?
